Look no further than your own kitchen! Homemade food gifts are a delightful way to show someone you care. Here’s how to find recipes, prepare them safely and efficiently, and package them beautifully and sustainably.

According to Good Housekeeping magazine, three of the most popular holiday gifts include a set of fishing tackle for catching largemouth and smallmouth bass (for men), a waffle knit pajama set with long sleeves and short pants (for women), and a piece of molded plastic called a Bilibo, which according to the manufacturer’s description can serve as “a turtle shell, a sand scooper,… a rescue helmet,… a cradle for dolls,” depending on the recipient’s imagination.

If none of these seem like the perfect gift for the special people in your life, and you’re thinking of maybe even staying away from mass-produced items entirely, here’s another suggestion: Give the gift of homemade food.

Everybody eats. And while there are lots of delicious items you can buy in stores, there’s really nothing that compares to food made with love and care. And it’s even better when that food was created with you in mind.

Now, let’s put the oven mitt on the other hand and consider how cool it would be for you to make delicious homemade treats for the special people on your “nice” list. Whether for holidays, birthdays, or — my personal favorite reason for gift giving — “just because,”  there’s a unique joy in both giving and receiving something homemade, especially when it’s edible!

Unlike mass-produced food items, food gifts are not just about what’s inside the package but also about the love, effort, and care that you pour into the final product.

In this article, we’ll explore the art of giving homemade food gifts with seven delicious recipes that you can easily give any time of year. And in keeping with our mission here at Food Revolution Network, they all pass our triple test of “healthy, ethical, and sustainable” — in addition to being totally delicious and festive!

Why Homemade Food Makes a Great Gift

Gifting something homemade rather than store-bought is great for you, the recipient, and the planet.

1. Save Money on Gifts

For one thing, you can save money by making gifts in bulk for multiple recipients. For example, the toasted spice blend recipe below includes sunflower and sesame seeds, as well as small amounts of several spices. You might pay up to $15 for just one spice blend from the store — or you can spend $20 on ingredients and get up to a dozen homemade batches that you can gift to others.

2. Reduce Plastic Waste

The planet benefits when you avoid the plastic waste that often serves as packaging for store-bought food and gifts. (I hereby declare that you get bonus points for gifting the food in a reusable container like these stainless steel food storage containers or even wide mouth mason jars.

3. Practical and Useable

The recipient of a food gift gets something usable and delicious, and, if you’ve done your homework, something they actually want. And — since it’s made with your love — they’ll get something unique. You and your recipient will also know the item was made and given with love (and received with love), which can strengthen and enrich your connection.

4. Controlled Ingredients

Speaking of homework, I’d recommend finding out about your recipients’ taste preferences, dietary restrictions, and allergies, so you can tailor your homemade food gifts to each person. Not only does this ensure a personal touch that store-bought gifts often lack, but it can also avoid the unfortunate situation where your holiday nut brittle sends your favorite aunt to the emergency room in anaphylactic shock.

Even without allergies to think about, when you make food gifts yourself, you get to control the ingredients. You can choose high-quality, whole-food ingredients without any refined sugar or questionable additives.

5. It’s Fun!

Homemade food gifting can also be fun for kids and adults, both as givers and receivers. Let your creativity go wild and create something you’re proud of!

Tips for Choosing a Food to Gift

iStock.com/yulka3ice

When choosing a food item to gift, do so with the recipient’s likes and dislikes in mind. The easiest way to gather this information is also the most straightforward: Ask them.

A high-probability strategy to avoid seriously bad outcomes — especially if kids are involved — is to make something that does not contain any of the nine major allergens (milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy, and sesame seeds). If you stick to 100% plant-based treats, you automatically avoid four of them, so you just have to be cognizant of the nuts and seeds, wheat, and soy.

As I mentioned earlier, one of the benefits of food gifting is the chance to cook in bulk, saving both time and money. If you’re unfamiliar with the practice of batch cooking, our meal prep guide has you covered.

Since you’re not FedEx, you may also want to consider making food gifts that are small or at least portable and easy to transport. If you’re going to gift wrap them, think about a form that’s easy to wrap, or at least to stick a bow on.

Some ideas of small and conveniently transported food gifts include the following:

  • Baked goods
  • Homemade canned goods, quick pickles, preserves, etc. (here’s where mason jars come in very handy)
  • Dried herbs, spice mixes, and loose-leaf teas (also a good use of mason jars — look for fancy ones often sold as wedding favors for that extra dash of class)
  • Spiced nuts and seeds or granola
  • Fire cider or kombucha
  • Sauces, soups, dressings, spreads (and DIY kits to make them)
  • Fruits, vegetables, and herbs from your garden

Unless you know that your recipient will want to consume the gift right away, it’s typically more convenient for them if the food is shelf-stable and doesn’t require refrigeration.

Alternatively, you can always gift a coupon for an item that the recipient can redeem at your mutual convenience (and you can have fun and use all your artistic creativity creating the coupon).

Where to Get Food Gift Ideas From

To get ideas for food gifts, peruse your favorite cookbooks, or think about cherished family recipes. At the risk of immodesty, this feels like a good time to mention the very first Food Revolution Network hardcover recipe book, Real Superfoods: Everyday Ingredients to Elevate Your Health.

Some of the recipes in that book that might qualify as excellent gifts include Golden Glow Lemonade (an awesome and delicious healing tonic), Crispy Miso Onion Chickpeas, Super Seedy Granola (seedy in a good way, I assure you), Velvety Chocolate Berry Dessert Cups (yes, healthy, although your recipient may not believe it after taking a bite), and Sublime Sweet Potato Mini Drop Biscuits. To whet your appetite, I’ve included two giftalicious recipes from Real Superfoods below: Sweet and Savory Spiced Pecans and FRN’s Fuel the Fire Cider.

You can also find candidates for food gifts in many other wonderful health-focused, plant-based cookbooks that we love. Check out the cookbook roundup on our blog for additional inspiration.

Practice Food Safety

iStock.com/shaferaphoto

Since you probably aren’t going to be preparing these food gifts in a commercial kitchen that has to undergo regular safety inspections, it’s really important that you practice fundamental food safety protocols. You do not want to share a side of salmonella with that jam because you did a slapdash job of washing a cutting board.

For kicks, let’s take a minute to review the basics:

  1. Keep things clean: wash your hands and food prep surfaces often.
  2. Separate: don’t cross-contaminate. Don’t chop veggies, for example, on a cutting board where you prepared a block of tofu (or meat if you eat it).
  3. Cook: heat all foods to proper temperatures to kill any pathogens, checking with a food thermometer to be on the safe side.
  4. Chill: refrigerate promptly to prevent bacteria from colonizing foods left for too long at room temperature.

If you will be canning items, be sure to also follow recommended food preservation guidelines to prevent spoilage.

What to Store or Wrap Your Gift In

iStock.com/FotoCuisinette

While the food inside is the main attraction, the food gift packaging can also add fun, sparkle, and class to the experience. You won’t care how great your friend’s homemade applesauce is if they just ladle a pint of it into your lap — which I realize is an extreme example. But this is what my mind sometimes does when I’m a bit hungry while writing about food.

As we’ve seen, another great thing about homemade food gifts is the opportunity for sustainable or zero-waste packaging. And you can decorate this packaging with love and the help of your cleverness and creativity.

Mason jars — and here are a pair of very fancy ones that just scream “vintage” — or upcycled glass containers work well because they’re see-through, so a beautiful spice mix or granola can serve as its own decoration. You can also paint on the glass, or adorn it with ribbons (which I realized just moments ago is an anagram of my last name) and other accents.

You can wrap baked goods in a classy tea towel, a pretty fabric scrap left over from a project, or a reusable food wrap. Then you can deliver them in a basket, tin, or decorated produce bag.

Cereals and mixes can go in reusable silicone bags, which themselves make lovely and thoughtful gifts for someone who likes cooking. If you enjoy secondhand shops and garage sales, you might be able to amass a collection of vintage cookware that would make excellent containers for your homemade food gifts.

Recipes to Give as Food Gifts

Giving can be just as fun as receiving, especially when you tap into your creative talents as an expression of thoughtfulness, care, and gratitude. Giving the gift of scrumptious food not only provides an exciting and rewarding experience for you, it makes sharing delicious plant-based foods even more fun. We hope you enjoy creating and giving these wholesome gifts from the heart with the help of these nourishing recipes!

1. FRN’s Fuel the Fire Cider

FRN’s Fuel the Fire Cider food gift idea

Give the gift of warmth this holiday season with Food Revolution’s Fire Cider. Warming and immune-supporting ginger, turmeric, onion, garlic, and horseradish root create an invigorating, nourishing, and healing tonic that is the perfect gift to give those who could use a little plant magic. What’s more, it’s the gift that keeps on giving. When the vinegar runs out, simply refill and steep again!

2. Toasted Spice Blend

Toasted Spice Blend

Creating your own homemade spice blend as a gift is a thoughtful and tasty way to express your love and appreciation any time of year. This easy-to-make blend is bursting with flavor from the variety of healthy seeds and spices and can transform any meh meal into a fantastic one in a snap. Plus, it’s guaranteed to put a huge smile on the receiver’s face!

3. Pickled Beets

Pickled Beets food gift idea

Vibrant jewel-colored beets set the tone for a merry and bright gift that is as delicious as it is festive! These sweet and tangy beauties are quick to make and don’t require complicated canning. Just stick them in the fridge overnight and enjoy! Pickled beets are an affordable, sustainable, and unique gift that the receiver can enjoy again and again on their own or as an ingredient in a variety of plant-based recipes.

4. Sweet and Savory Pecans

Sweet and Savory Pecans giftable food

When giving the gift of Sweet and Savory Pecans, be prepared for many thank-yous and compliments. What may seem like a rather complex and elegant gift actually couldn’t be more simple to create. These easy-to-make pecans are perfectly sweet, a little savory, and plenty crunchy. To gift them, add them to a mason jar, reusable box, or storage container. In fact, you may spend more time considering how you’d like to present the gift than making the gift itself!

Editor’s Note: Obviously, this is not a recipe for those with nut allergies. If you or your recipient is allergic to nuts, you could make a variation of this with sunflower and pumpkin seeds or try our Super Seedy Granola instead.

5. Balsamic Fig Jam

Balsamic Fig Jam giftable food

This jam is sweet, savory, and just a little bit tangy. A delightful fusion of caramel figs, tart-yet-sweet balsamic, and minty thyme, Balsamic Fig Jam makes a great hostess gift to bring to your next gathering or to contribute to a celebratory vegan charcuterie board! We highly encourage you to whip up a few batches to gift to those on your list who love a sweet and sentimental gift made from whole fruit.

6. Crispy Rosemary Cracker Thins

Crispy Rosemary Cracker Thins

Cracker-making in your own kitchen?! It’s not only a fun activity for you and your family to do together, but it can also make gift-giving even more exciting! These homemade crispy cracker thins are a simple way to express your thoughtfulness and care. Best of all there are no natural or artificial flavorings needed. Thanks to the addition of rosemary, you’re left with a festive and delightfully herby flavor that’s perfect for the gift-giving season!

7. Pecan Cranberry Snowball Cookies

Pecan Cranberry Snowball Cookies gift

Show your appreciation to friends, family, and neighbors this year with the gift of these tasty snowball cookies. You can gift them in a recyclable container or large mason jar. And don’t forget to include a handwritten note about how much you appreciate them (the recipient, that is, not the cookies). Once they try these snowballs, however, they’ll likely send some appreciation right back to you. (P.S. Double the batch so you have some to keep for yourself!)

Editor’s Note: For a nut-free version of this recipe, replace the almond meal with another cup of oat flour and use seeds in place of the pecans.

The Gift of Food Is the Gift of Health

Homemade gifts can be incredibly special both for the giver and receiver. And food, in particular, makes a great gift. You know it’ll get used, and it won’t take up space the way many consumer goods do.

There are many different ways to give food as a gift. But you can start by unleashing your creativity in the kitchen. And then keep that creativity going by using reusable or upcycled items for packaging and containers. Because with homemade food gifts, you’re also giving a piece of your heart, time, and effort, which is a beautiful way to express your love and care for the recipient.

Tell us in the comments:

  • Have you ever received a homemade food gift? What was your favorite thing about the experience?
  • What are some dishes you make that might make great gifts?
  • Who are three people you can think of who would be grateful recipients of the gift of homemade food?

It’s that special time of year when many of us celebrate major holidays with family and friends. Often, gift-giving is a part of the holiday tradition. Giving and receiving gifts can add to the magic of human connection — especially when gifts are an expression of your love and values. But in an age of rampant consumerism, I think it’s worthwhile to take a step back and reconnect with the true meaning of our holidays — our “holy days” — before pulling out our credit cards and buying mass-produced stuff for the people we love.

One of the “bugs” in the human brain is that we are terrible at predicting how happy we will be if certain things come our way. I remember as a kid being utterly convinced that this or that toy would make me happy for the rest of my life. And if somehow I got that toy, it almost never lived up to my expectations.

But it’s not just kids who have this problem. In Stumbling on Happiness, psychologist Dan Gilbert shares research that shows humans are terrible at “affective forecasting” — that is, predicting how something in the future will make them feel.

What Truly Makes Us Happy?

Not more stuff, or better stuff, or newer stuff. The longest-running study on happiness, the Harvard Study of Adult Development, started in 1938 by following 724 men (about 60 are still alive). One of the biggest factors correlated with happiness in the research was close relationships: with spouses, family, friends, and community members. The more time these men spent enjoying the company of others, the happier and more fulfilled they were.

A close second was meaning: doing work (paid or volunteer) that fulfilled a sense of purpose. Being of service was good for those served, and even better for those doing the serving.

Which brings me back to the holidays. While different religious traditions observe different festivals and tell different stories, there are always underlying themes of togetherness, compassion, unity, and love. I can’t think of a single holiday that’s celebrated by focusing on your own needs to the exclusion of others.

A Sustainable Approach to Gift-Giving

So instead of just buying the latest and greatest thing, try giving what is uniquely yours to give this year: a poem, a meaningful story, a massage. If you have a skill, can you deploy it on behalf of the recipient? Fix their dripping kitchen faucet. Mend a wobbly chair. Help them declutter their garage.

Or what about volunteering or donating money to an organization that embodies their deepest values and most profound longings for the world?

Purchased gifts don’t have to be physical things, either. What about gifting experiences, like a membership to a botanical garden or offering to take your loved one on a hike to your favorite spot in nature?

If you do buy physical gifts, choose ones that enable connection, or help them to live healthier lives. A big part of successful gifting is taking the time to think about the person you’re giving the gift to. What do they love? What would they find fun? Or what forms of social connection do they enjoy?

Another strategy for choosing great gifts is to find things that make it easier for people to enhance their health, and if possible, to make the world a healthier place as well. High-quality kitchenware, well-made air and water filters, and fair-trade and sustainable foods and crafts — all of these are sustainable gift ideas that fall into this category.

Let Your Gifts Enhance Life and Happiness for Everyone

Let’s honor our holidays — and our loved ones, and ourselves — by gifting to enhance life and happiness for everyone. By sharing our unique light with those around us. And by seeing, and supporting, through our words, actions, and purchases, the special qualities in the special people in our lives.

In that spirit, our team here at Food Revolution Network has compiled some favorite causes related to food justice, environmental healing, and animal welfare along with some of our favorite food- and health-related sustainable gift ideas. Check them out for family and friends, or even consider them for yourself!

Giving Opportunities

Sustainable gift ideas for the holidays - charitable donations

Sometimes the best gift of all is contributing to a cause you or a loved one believes in. These are some of our favorite charities and nonprofits.

Wholesome Wave

Wholesome Wave is a nonprofit working to end not just food insecurity, but nutrition insecurity across the US. They believe access to healthy food should be a right, not a privilege. Some of their programs include working on a produce prescription program with health care providers, closing the gap between those who need food assistance and those who are able to get it through government programs, and doubling SNAP benefits when food stamps are used on fruits and vegetables. Every dollar provides 10 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables for those in need.

Charity: Water

Our bodies are made of mostly water — somewhere around 60%. And we all need water to survive. Unfortunately, millions of people worldwide don’t have access to this basic human right. Charity: Water funds water programs in 27 countries around the globe. And they work to provide clean water in rural and poverty-stricken communities. If you make a donation for yourself, or in the name of a friend or family member, you can rest assured it will bring water to people in need.

Soul Fire Farm

Soul Fire Farm is a community farm based in Petersburg, NY, run by co-director and farm manager, Leah Penniman. Using afro-indigenous farming practices, they seek to regenerate land for community use in order to end food apartheid and uproot racism in the food system. Through food sovereignty programs and workshops, Soul Fire Farm works to bring healing and agricultural skills back to Black and brown folks to reclaim their collective right to connect with the earth and have agency within the food system. They’re currently raising funds for a capital campaign, so they can upgrade their facilities for future training and community programs.

Trees for the Future

Trees are essential to life. They provide oxygen, store carbon, and revitalize the soil. Trees for the Future has planted more than 145 million trees in dozens of countries. As a result, they’ve improved thousands of lives, helping families transition from unsustainable farming techniques to more sustainable practices. Every donation goes toward the planting of a valuable tree — often a fruit or nut tree — in a low-income community. Help end hunger and poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa with this sustainable gift idea, and keep our world full of life-giving trees.

Planting Justice

The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. And the majority of those in prison are disproportionately people of color. Planting Justice works with those impacted by mass incarceration and other areas of inequality. By cultivating skills and resources such as growing food, they keep people out of prison and create living-wage jobs, while also inspiring community healing and food justice. Your donation goes to support projects like the creation of edible permaculture gardens and food justice curriculums in schools.

ECP

The Educated Choices Program (ECP) educates students of all ages about the impact of nutrition and their food choices on health, animals, and the environment. Their programs include interactive presentations on topics like “Healthful Eating” and “Modern Animal Agriculture.” Students are challenged to address these issues and think critically about them, discussing their importance in an academic setting. ECP has touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of students. Donations support their vital programs in schools, allowing educators to prepare the future leaders of tomorrow.

Environmental Working Group

The folks at Environmental Working Group (EWG) work to educate consumers on the dangers of toxic chemicals and pesticides in the food supply and drinking water. They also maintain a cosmetics database, which tracks the ingredient safety of personal care products. Their reports, guides, campaigns, apps, and product verifications are an invaluable resource for keeping your family safe and healthy.

The Ron Finley Project

Known as the “gangsta gardener,” Ron Finley is working to bring community gardening and regeneration to urban spaces. Currently, The Ron Finley Project operates a community garden in a South Central LA neighborhood that serves as a gathering place for horticultural and nutritional education. You can support the garden and Ron’s vision, here.

Farm Sanctuary

Factory farms contribute to the destruction of our environment through greenhouse gases. Industrialized agriculture causes food contamination and recalls, antibiotic resistance, and animal cruelty. Many animals raised on factory farms never see a blade of grass in their life. But Farm Sanctuary educates people on the plight of farm animals and the hazards of factory farming. They also rescue animals from cruelty and impending slaughter and give them the opportunity to live happy, healthy, and free lives. Through their animal sponsorship programs, you can adopt a farm animal, which includes an adoption certificate, photo of your animal, sticker, meet and greet at one of the sanctuaries (in New York or Los Angeles), and a discount off of Farm Sanctuary merchandise.

Kitchen Enhancements

A home chef or cooking aficionado might enjoy one of these healthy, handpicked kitchen enhancements.

Cutting Board

Whether you’re chopping vegetables or tofu, every kitchen needs a good cutting board. And I’m not talking about one of those cheap plastic boards you can buy in 3-packs from Walmart. If you’ve ever tried preparing a salad on a plastic slab with the footprint of an iPad mini, you know that most of it will end up rolling off the board and onto the counter, or worse, the floor. With a high-quality, right-sized cutting board, you can look those carrot rounds in the eye and confidently proclaim, “You’re not getting away this time!”

Surprise the chef in your life with a cutting board that’s long-lasting and won’t damage knives.

Maple Cutting Board by Mevell

This beautiful wooden cutting board from Mevell comes at a reasonable price point despite being made from maple. The wood is sustainably grown in the US, handcrafted in Canada, and approved by the National Sanitation Foundation for use in commercial kitchens. Best of all, Mevell plants a tree for every cutting board they sell.

Food Storage Containers

Most food storage containers are plastic, which while cheap and convenient, come at a cost to your health and the environment. Good alternatives are stainless steel and glass, which won’t leach chemicals and are more sustainable options. They make a great gift for the people in your life who are always on-the-go or who have large families and always seem to have leftovers to store.

And for those people who have that special kitchen drawer overflowing with mismatched Tupperware lids, Rubbermaid containers, and Chinese restaurant takeout boxes, a nice set of glass or stainless steel containers might be just the thing to bring a little peace and harmony back into their lives.

Bayco Glass Food Storage Containers with Lids, [24 Piece]

This 24-piece food storage set includes round, square, and rectangular glass containers with locking plastic lids. You’ll get containers of different sizes, from one and a half cups all the way up to four and a half cups. The non-porous glass and BPA-free lids ensure your thoughtful gift is safe and non-toxic. This is a great starter set for a couple or family.

Stainless Steel Airtight Watertight Food Storage Containers from Life Without Plastic

These high-quality, food-grade stainless steel containers are lightweight, durable, watertight, and versatile. Multiple sizes and shapes are available to accommodate all kinds of leftovers and ready to go meals. The non-removable silicone seals on the lids, along with three stainless steel latches, make each container leak-proof and airtight. No more accidentally wearing lunch when the car you’re in has to make that hard right turn during morning rush hour! Also perfect for school lunches or picnics. The containers should last a long time and are dishwasher safe. The lids are best left out of the dishwasher, as high heat can degrade the silicone seal.

Pots & Pans

A nice single skillet or a set of pots and pans make for a practical gift that will get used over and over again. Although there are many different types of cookware, these selections won’t leach chemicals into food or the air.

Cuisinart MCP-12N Multiclad Pro Stainless Steel 12-Piece Cookware Set

This Cusinart cookware set is one of many fine stainless steel pot and pan sets. All the pots and pans are multiclad with stainless steel interiors and exteriors (for toughness and safety), and an aluminum core for enhanced heat conductivity. This cookware works on induction, gas, and electric stoves and is dishwasher safe.

Cuisinart Chef’s Classic Enameled Cast Iron 10-Inch Round Fry Pan

Many conventional pans and cookware sets are non-stick and use a Teflon coating, which can emit toxic fumes into the air. But this 10-inch enameled cast iron pan from Cuisinart Chef is free from Teflon and provides even heat distribution for use on all stovetop types, including induction. Although it’s a cast iron pan, because of the enamel coating, it doesn’t require seasoning. Enameled cast iron is a great choice because its surface is non-porous and doesn’t absorb any flavors or odors. And it’s dishwasher-safe and easy to clean.

Blenders

A high-efficiency blender makes a lovely gift during the holidays. Recipients can whip up smoothies, juices, dips, and soups. It’s a great way to encourage healthier eating!

Vitamix Blender

Although it’s on the pricier side, the Vitamix’s high-quality makes it a valuable and highly sought after gift. Most models come with a 64-ounce container made with Tritan, a plastic that doesn’t contain BPA. They also make a 48-ounce stainless steel container (that costs extra). The Vitamix can quickly and easily make a frozen dessert or a morning smoothie. And it can grind up seeds and blend fruits and vegetables with its stainless steel blades.

Water Filter

Around 20% of the municipal water in the US has unsafe lead levels. And that’s just one contaminant. With our water supply under siege by industrial and agricultural pollution, a high-quality water filter is an important resource in almost every kitchen.

AquaTru

AquaTru is a reverse osmosis unit that sits on the countertop and includes carbon filter technology. It delivers high-quality water and flavor. The system removes fluoride in addition to chromium-6 and a great many other contaminants from tap water. Give your loved ones the gift of truly clean water, and get it now (with the link above) for a special $100 discount.

Plant Milk Maker

While it’s not a kitchen necessity, a plant-milk maker can save you or your loved ones both time and money.

Almond Cow

There are so many milk alternatives on the market these days. And while we celebrate that fact, buying cartons and cartons of almond milk can add costs over time (not to mention creating additional landfill waste). But with the Almond Cow, you can have the plant-based milk of your choice with just the push of a button. Take your pick of almond milk, oat milk, cashew milk, or the nut, seed, or grain-based milk of your choosing. No straining bags necessary! (Use the code FOODREVOLUTION for a special discount.)

Sustainable Gift Ideas

The future of the world is in our hands. Consider one of these healthy and sustainable gift ideas to cut back on plastic waste.

Stainless Steel Straws

Plastic straw waste is a huge strain on the environment. And many countries and companies have issued plastic straw bans to combat the problem. Some places have replaced plastic with disposable paper straws, but they’re not a long-term solution. Instead, consider investing in stainless steel straws, like this set from Amazon. You’ll get 12 extra-long drinking straws: 3 each of bent and straight varieties for both 20-ounce and 30-ounce tumblers. The set also includes cleaning brushes and a carrying bag. Another great stocking stuffer idea for the sustainability-conscious people in your life.

Yuhme Reusable Water Bottle

Only about 23% of plastic bottles are recycled in the US. That means the rest end up in landfills and in our waterways, polluting both water and soil. Yuhme has created an environmentally conscious water bottle made from sugarcane that’s CO2 negative. They’re made, not in China, but in Sweden, where workers earn a living wage. And for every bottle sold, they are able to provide six months of clean water to a person in the Central African Republic through their charity partner Water for Good. With several beautiful designs to choose from, this sustainable gift idea will leave you looking good and doing good as you hydrate.

Health & Beauty Gifts

Many conventional health and beauty items contain harmful chemicals that are toxic and can contribute to chronic health conditions. If you’re looking for healthier and sustainable options, try one of these companies instead.

Annmarie Skin Care Clean Beauty Trial Kits

Give the gift of natural, organic, and wild-crafted skincare, makeup, and essential oil products. Annmarie Skin Care uses non-toxic, non-GMO, fair-trade, and gluten-free ingredients. Plus, they never test on animals. Snap up one of their trial kits for yourself or a loved one. Each kit contains a trial size of their Aloe Herb Cleanser and Anti-Aging Serum along with a bonus sample of their Anti-Aging Facial Oil all for just $19.99 (plus, free shipping!).

Purity Woods’ Age-Defying Dream Cream

If you’re looking for healthy, non-toxic skincare, look no further than Purity Woods’ Age-Defying Dream Cream. Made with 10 of the top natural, organic, and cruelty-free ingredients in the industry, this cream can help reduce visible signs of aging, tighten pores, and even protect your skin from the sun. Get your bottle (or bottles) for a special Food Revolution Network member price, here.

AirDoctor Pro

Air quality plays a big role in health. And since so many of us spend the majority of our time indoors, a quality air filter is important. You could easily spend thousands of dollars on high-quality air filters. But for about a third of the price of most high-quality systems, you can get fresh, clean air with the AirDoctor Pro. It comes with an UltraHEPA filter that’s 100x more effective than conventional air purifiers. And combined with its dual-action Carbon/Gas Trap/VOC Filter you can rest assured that allergens, gases, and toxic chemicals are filtered out too.

The Gift Of Love

Giving and receiving are fundamental to human happiness and wellbeing. They enrich our lives, they open our hearts, and they make our days more beautiful. There are countless ways to share love and support, and many of them don’t cost a cent. Whether you buy a gift, prepare food, share an experience, write a poem, or give a hug, always remember that your love matters. And that there are limitless ways to express it!

Food Storage Containers: 2 Sustainable, Non-Toxic Options

What’s the best way to store food? Whether it’s for leftovers, lunches, or snacks, reusable, non-plastic containers are a great way to go — for the environment and for your health.

Stainless steel and glass storage containers both make excellent and affordable gifts that recipients will appreciate again and again.

Stainless Steel Food Storage Containers from Life Without Plastic — Varies

For durability, food safety, and versatility, stainless steel food storage containers are a smart option. Because they’re light and portable, they’re great for transporting food. The ones from Life Without Plastic are some of the best. They’re leak-proof and air-tight. And they fit just about every need. Complete with clips to keep the lids secure, these storage containers are long-lasting, and children can open them easily. (Tip: The lids shouldn’t go in the dishwasher because heat can damage the silicone seal.) Get great stainless steel containers from Life Without Plastic here.

Glass Food Storage Containers

Storing food in glass containers keeps ingredients and meals fresh. And you can see exactly what’s available to eat.

Pyrex Storage 10-Piece Set, Clear with Blue Lids

Pyrex containers are highly affordable for their value. They’re made of non-porous glass that won’t absorb food odors, flavors, or stains. The containers are also oven, microwave, refrigerator, freezer, and dishwasher safe. However, the lids are plastic and are not microwave or dishwasher-safe.

This 10-piece Pyrex set makes a great gift for someone who is starting a new kitchen or needs to upgrade their food storage options. It includes two 2-cup round containers, one 3½-cup rectangular container, one 4-cup round, and one 6-cup rectangular storage container. You can feel good knowing this gift will probably get used most days of the week. Get this glass food storage set here.

Skillet — A Tool for Almost Every Cooking and Baking Use

An enameled cast-iron skillet is a much-appreciated kitchen appliance because it’s easy to clean and naturally nonstick (without being toxic!). And unlike regular cast iron skillets, it’s relatively lightweight.

Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Signature Iron Handle Skillet, 6.33″ (1/2 qt.), Cerise

This lightweight enameled cast-iron skillet from Le Creuset is beautiful! And it’s perfect for serving food out of the oven or off the stove. Use it to stir-fry, bake, and sauté. A great feature of this skillet, which solves an issue found with many other cast-iron skillets, is the 4-layer durable enamel. That means it doesn’t need seasoning or special maintenance. It’s also resistant to cracking and rusting. And to top it off, this skillet is ideal for cooking with little or no added fat or oil. So it makes a great gift for someone who’s trying to eat healthier. Get this fabulous skillet here.

Another Essential Kitchen Tool: A Good Cutting Board

Besides sharp knives, a quality cutting board is something of a food prep necessity.

John Boos Chop-N-Slice 20-by-15-Inch Cutting Board

This classic model is beautiful, reversible, and highly functional. Plus it’s made from a natural material — maple wood. Professional chefs around the world use John Boos high-quality cutting boards. With proper care, this premium cutting board will last for many years. Get this quality cutting board here.

Blenders — Because Everyone Will Need One

Blenders are not all the same. If you’ve ever used a quality one, you know that a powerful blender makes a huge impact and can also save you precious time.

If you can afford to get a good one, check out the one below. And if not — don’t stress. A “regular” blender can do most jobs well enough.

Vitamix E310

You may have heard it before, but it really is true: The Vitamix is an outstanding piece of kitchen equipment. This high-performance blender can easily and quickly make smoothies, shakes, and frozen drinks. It also turns whole produce into juice with the fiber left in. This space-saving model fits on the counter, even in smaller kitchens. It’s an impressive gift that will save someone a lot of time in the kitchen and is sure to be well-used. Get this top-notch blender here.

Causes We Love to Support

Giving and receiving gifts can be great. But giving to charity, especially in honor of a loved one, can be a fabulous way of supporting causes that you, and they, believe in.

Open Source Wellness — An Oakland-based Nonprofit That Helps People Move, Nourish, Connect, and Be

Many doctors give behavioral prescriptions, like “exercise more,” “eat healthier,” “get some social support,” or “reduce your stress.” But how can patients get help with these recommendations? Open Source Wellness “fills” doctor’s prescriptions for physical behaviors: activity, healthy meals, stress reduction, and social connection. And they get tremendous, proven results. They call themselves a “pharmacy” for the universal practices that drive human health and wellbeing. Instead of handouts, lectures, or classes, this nonprofit facilitates experiences. Participants exercise, eat, meditate, and connect authentically with peer coaches and each other — all in support of individual, family, and community health and thriving. Open Source Wellness strives to transform the health system and spread this model nationwide. Watch their inspiring, 3-minute video below:

And consider donating here.

Moving Medicine Forward — An Initiative Bringing Nutrition Education to Medical Schools

Food choices can support good health or harm it. Yet most Western-trained physicians practice medicine as if food has no effect on the diseases they seek to cure. Why is the power of nutrition not being taught in medical schools? To address this concern, food revolutionary Michael Klaper, MD, is joining with PlantPure Communities (a nonprofit organization founded by Nelson Campbell, son of Dr. T. Colin Campbell author of The China Study) to launch a new education and action campaign. Moving Medicine Forward will bring the revolutionary power of plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine to medical schools across North America.

Dr. Klaper plans to create courses in plant-based nutrition for health professionals; to make live presentations at medical schools; to encourage students and faculty to form Nutrition Interest Groups at each school, and to work with faculty members to encourage each medical school to create their own courses in nutrition. If you want to help awaken tomorrow’s physicians to the power of plant-powered healing, you can learn more and donate here.

Charity: Water — A Nonprofit Bringing Clean Water to People in Need Around the World

Everyone deserves clean drinking water. Unfortunately, almost a billion people worldwide don’t have access to precious, life-giving water. Charity Water brings clean, safe water to millions of people in developing countries. The nonprofit partners with other organizations to build sustainable, community-owned water projects. If you decide to make a donation, you can feel good that 100% of your gift will bring clean water to people in need. Watch their informative, inspiring 2-minute video below:

And if the spirit moves you, you can donate here.

Trees for the Future — A Nonprofit That Helps Communities Around the World Plant Trees

Trees are beneficial for people and the planet. Some people even say our future depends on trees. The nonprofit Trees for the Future has planted more than 145 million trees in dozens of countries. And they’ve revitalized hundreds of thousands of acres of soil. As a result, the nonprofit has improved the lives of thousands of families, allowing them to transition from unsustainable farming techniques to more sustainable practices. Giving to Trees for the Future has a direct impact on the earth and the lives of people who need it most. Learn more about the power of trees below:

To support this cause, you can donate here.

Environmental Working Group — A Nonprofit That Empowers People to Live Healthier Lives In A Healthier Environment

What’s in your tap water? What pesticides are in your food? And what do GMOs do to our land and water? Environmental Working Group seeks answers to these questions and more. And it’s all to help people know more about their environment and protect their health. Through reports, online databases, mobile apps, and communication campaigns, EWG educates consumers to make safer and more informed decisions about the products they buy and the companies they support. Their groundbreaking research is changing the debate over environmental health. See more about their work in this video:

And if you want to support their work, donate here.

Planting Justice — A Nonprofit That Empowers People, Including Prison Inmates, with Sustainable Farming Skills

This San-Francisco-based nonprofit addresses a wide range of social issues. These issues include food sovereignty, the prison-industrial complex, and unequal educational opportunities. Planting Justice educates people about environmental sustainability and builds urban permaculture gardens. They also assist inmates in finding well-paying jobs after they serve their sentences. Planting Justice even employs ex-convicts to encourage community involvement in food sustainability. Donate to their work here.

Center for Food Safety — A Nonprofit Helps Protects Our Food, Our Farms, and Our Environment

This US-wide nonprofit is a legal and consumer advocacy group that works to protect human health and the environment. By promoting organic and other forms of sustainable agriculture, Center for Food Safety aims to curb the use of harmful food production technologies. And they educate consumers about organic food and products. In addition to legal actions, scientific and policy reports, books, and other educational materials, they also use market pressure and grassroots campaigns. Support their important work by donating here.

Over the Holiday Season, Remember This

Giving great health and wellness gifts can be a wonderful way to show others how much you love and appreciate them. But the best thing you can give is yourself. Be sure to spend quality time with your friends and family.

Cheers to a healthy holiday season!
